»Sladest« wurde im September 1973 im Vereinigten Königreich veröffentlicht und setzte sich wie die letzten Slade-Singles direkt an die Spitze der Charts. Nachdem sie die Spitze wieder abgegeben hatte und gegen Ende des Jahres um die Top Ten herum schwebte, kletterte sie Anfang 1974 im Zuge des großen Erfolgs ihrer nächsten Single »Merry Xmas Everybody« wieder auf Platz eins.
Dieser Weihnachtshit war nicht auf dem Album enthalten, aber Sladest enthielt alle Slade-Hits bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt sowie mehrere Singles, die vor ihrem Durchbruch in den Charts veröffentlicht wurden, und eine Handvoll Titel aus ihrem unterschätzten zweiten Album (das Ende 1970 erschien), Play It Loud.
Salvos Version wurde um drei weitere Höhepunkte aus dieser Zeit erweitert - den Nr. 2-Hit »My Friend Stan«, seine schnörkellose, rockige B-Seite »My Town« und das geniale Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli-Pastiche »Kill 'Em At The Hot Club Tonite« (die B-Seite von »Skweeze Me Pleeze Me«) - sowie eine bisher unveröffentlichte Version von Hear Me Calling, dem Stück, mit dem sie viele Jahre lang ihre Live-Show eröffneten. Die letztgenannte Aufnahme, die straffer strukturiert ist als die klassische Slade Alive-Version (obwohl sie ein fast identisches Gitarrensolo von Dave Hill enthält), lag völlig in Vergessenheit, bis sie vor kurzem auf einem Vinyl-Acetat entdeckt wurde - das einst dem Schlagzeuger Don Powell gehörte - und dazu dient, den Reiz dieses für viele stärksten Slade-Albums noch zu verstärken. Es fängt die Band auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Glam-Rock-Ruhms ein und enthält einige der besten Popsongs der siebziger Jahre.

Als das Originalalbum 1973 veröffentlicht wurde, stellte es eine ‘Best Of’ ihrer bisherigen Karriere dar, mit fünf UK Nr. 1-Hits, ein paar weiteren Singles, sowie eine Handvoll Tracks aus ihrem zweiten Album ‘Play It Loud’.
Für diese Remaster-Version im ‘Gatefold LP-Replik Digi’ wurde das bereits starke Originalalbum mit 4 Bonustracks zusätzlich aufgewertet: Die Single ’My Friend Stan’, die dazugehörige B-Seite ’My Town’, eine weitere B-Seite ’Kill ’Em At The Hot Club Tonite’, sowie eine bislang unveröffentlichte Version von ’Hear Me Calling’.
Wie alle Veröffentlichungen in der Remaster-Serie wurde diese Reissue von Tim Turan (der u. a. auch die Status Quo-Remasters ’machte’) digital neu gemastert, und ist mit ausführlichem Booklet mit raren Fotos ausgestattet.
Released in the UK in September 1973, Sladest emulated recent Slade singles by going straight to the top of the charts. After relinquishing the summit and hovering around the Top Ten towards the end of the year, it climbed back up to the Number One spot in early 1974 in the wake of the huge success of their next single Merry Xmas Everybody.
That seasonal smash wasn’t included on the album, but Sladest did contain all of Slade’s hits up to that point, as well as several singles released prior to their chart breakthrough and a handful of tracks from their underrated second album (released late in 1970), Play It Loud.
Salvo’s version has been expanded by the inclusion of three further highlights from the period concerned - the No. 2 hit My Friend Stan, its no-nonsense, rocking B-side My Town and the ingenious Django Reinhardt / Stephane Grappelli pastiche Kill ‘Em At The Hot Club Tonite (the B-side of Skweeze Me Pleeze Me) - plus a previously unreleased version of Hear Me Calling, the track with which they opened their live show for many years. The latter recording, more tightly structured than the classic, build-to-a-roar Slade Alive version (though featuring an almost identical guitar solo from Dave Hill), lay entirely forgotten until recently discovered on a vinyl acetate – which was once the property of drummer Don Powell - and serves to further strengthen the appeal of what is, to many, Slade’s strongest album. Capturing the band at the height of the glam rock fame, it contains some of the very best pop songs of the seventies.
