Led Zeppelin im Kopf und Coca Cola im Blut, das kannte man von Rival Sons schon. Aber so amerikanisch wie auf Head Down klang selbst ihr ziemlich amerikanischer Bluesrock bisher nicht.
Das dritte Album zeigt die Kalifornier nicht nur als Band, die das musikalische Erbe von Engländern wie The Who bis Free sauber mit lässig-breitbeinigem US-Dur wie dem von The Black Crowes verquickt. Öfter klingen auch die weißen Soul-Brüder durch, die im Auftrag des Herrn rocken.
"Run From Revelation" hat neben dem Stampf-Refrain nicht nur einen vielsagenden Titel, sondern auch seine Strophen-Gitarre aus demselben Sumpf bei New Orleans gefischt wie Jack White. Jordan begnügt sich dann nicht mit einer tagesmüden Slide-Gitarre, die Halbballade steuert zielsicher auf den Gospel-Chor am Ende zu. Natürlich gibt es trotzdem Songs wie" You Want To", das gleich ein dreifacher Kniefall ist: Vor Led Zeppelins Riffs, deren Sänger Robert Plant und spätestens im Schlagzeugsolo auch vor deren Hit "Whole Lotta Love". Auch das mächtige Zwei-Song-Monument Manifest "Destiny", ein psychedelischer Riff-Koloss mit Led-Zep-Prägung, schlägt in diese Kerbe. Mit "Nava" gibt es aber eben auch ein indisch angehauchtes Akustikgitarren-Instrumental. Und das launige "All The Way", das klingt, als würden Creedence Clearwater Revival "Let There Be Rock" von AC/DC neu interpretieren nur dass Sänger Jay Buchanan den Rock hier lediglich indirekt preist, indem er erzähl-singt, wie die Gitarre ihm als schmächtigem Jungmann Mädchen und Selbstbewusstsein verschaffte. Wie vielseitig er als Sänger und seine Band überhaupt mittlerweile ist, unterstreicht Buchanan dann nochmal im besinnlichen Album-Ausstieg "True".

Product Information
The follow-up to the band’s 2011 breakthrough album, PRESSURE & TIME, was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb and Grammy-wining engineer Vance Powell. The artwork was created by Jason Holley.
JAY explains:
“We took a lyric from one of the songs that exemplified the process of making the record. Head Down comes from the term ‘Keep your head down and keep on swinging’. I thought it was fitting and it works perfectly with the album cover.”
SCOTT discusses the album artwork:
“I began searching for the right artist for our cover on the interwebs, just mulling around, and very quickly came across Jason Holley. I saw a couple of covers that he had done for Josh Ritter and Ray LaMontagne which I loved. I was immediately taken aback by his aesthetic and style and felt he had a few pieces already done that I would be into using. I sent some of his images over to Jay and he had the same immediate feeling I did… Which is pretty rare. He could have been from anywhere in the world, but he just so happened to live about 30 minutes away from me, so I gave him a ring and we started talking. We sent him the record and discussed ideas that we felt reflected the music and process. He then created an original piece, painted in oil. The end result is pretty symbolic and interesting – something that, in my opinion, reflects the record beautifully.”

„Lässig gefällig wie bei ‘Wild Animal’ oder Jet-senkrechtstartend (‘Until The Sun Comes’) gelingt den Kaliforniern jede Nummer noch stimmiger, knackig-frischer und konsequenter klassisch als zuvor. Von großartig gefühlten Levon Holmes Band-Momenten (‘Jordan’) über Seelentröster wie ‘The Heist’ bis zum epischen Vexierspiel ‘Manifest Destiny’ mit The Doors-hafter Jam-Gelöstheit – es gab sogar „damals“ kaum eine Band, die jene stilistische Offenheit im Sinne des Soul’n’Roll in sich vereinte. Dementsprechend sind erneute sieben Punkte auch keine simple Sympathisanten-Farce im schöwinistischen Sinne. Ausnahmeerscheinungen in einer zu oft zu normisierten Rock-Welt verdienen konsequent Ausnahmenoten.“
