Having toured practically the whole of Europe during the last few years, Mocky, who was born in Canada under the name of Dominic Salole, is about to release his third solo recording, "Navy Brown Blues". On his new album, Mocky, who is renowned for his soulful, genre-transgressing music and existential and sensitive lyrics, has put aside his laptop (which he still held in his hands on the sleeve of the predecessor album, "Are+Be"), coming up with a fantastic record which he will for the first time also perform live, supported by a big line-up: "At the age of 14, I already smuggled my drums backstage in a hockey bag at jazz clubs because I was too young to play there officially," says Mocky, "and now , the time has come for me to smuggle acoustic instruments back into electronic music!"
Mocky moved from Canada to Europe in 1999 to join his friends, Gonzales and Peaches, with whom he had already played in Canada in the legendary band The Shit (whose song "Animal" also features in a new version on "Navy Brown Blues"). He brought out a number of 12 inches and remixes and played in Mercury Prize winner and tabla maestro Talvin Sing's band. 2001 saw the arrival of his first solo album, "In Mesopotamia", and a tour through the
zoos of Europe's capitals to promote the album. This tour helped him to find his very own sound. "Monkeys can be an extremely discriminating audience," comments Mocky, looking back. At any rate, the search for his "own sound" seems to be of fundamental importance for Mocky. His mixed Yemeni / British origins and his family heritage of writers and philosophers
(his grandfather wrote the book, "In Mesopotamia", to which his debut's title refers) allow Mocky to repeatedly phrase an existential question in his music: "Who are we?"
The success of his hit, "Sweet Music", in 2004 led to a contract with Four Music and his second album release, "Are + Be". The album underpinned his reputation as an underground pop phenomenon. Songs such as "Mickey Mouse Muthaf"#*as" and his legendary Google video narrowly escaped a lawsuit from the Disney corporation. Another key track on the album, "How Will I Know You", featured Jamie Lidell and marked the beginning of a fruitful cooperation between the two artists / producers, impressively continued on "Navy Brown Blues", last but not least in Jamie's soulful falsetto vocals on "In The Meantime". Next to British-born Lidell, Mocky 's long-standing collaborator Gonzales is on board again, playing a number of tracks live with Mocky at a studio in Paris. The vocals for the first single release from the album, "Fightin' Away The Tears", featuring Canadian vocalist Feist, were also recorded in Paris, while Mocky produced the rest of the album at his new backyard studio in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Taylor Savvy completes the vocal triumvirate that could already be heard in precisely the same constellation on "Are + Be", on the track "Elementary".
"Navy Brown Blues" breathes Mocky 's musical experiences of the last three years, which have continued to bring him new commissions, next to frequent collaborations with his compatriots and his everyday work with underground artists from Berlin: after Mocky had co-written and co-produced Jamie Lidell's album "Multiply", he recently took over the musical direction of Swedish vocalist Soffy O.'s debut album and played on a number of tracks on
the upcoming Jane Birkin album in Paris.
Despite his musical multi-tasking as a solo artist, songwriter, producer and remixer, Mocky has recorded his most personal and accessible album to date in "Navy Brown Blues", even creating a new colour, "navy brown", to unhinge the prevailing black / white mentality. In 2006, Mocky will use his laptop the old fashioned way again, to check his e-mails - and not to make music. And on stage, he will breathe real life into his album with the Navy Brown Blues Band.

Reviews
