Zwanzig Jahre ist es her, als erstmals die unvergleichlichen Stimmen von Ladysmith Black Mambazo auf Paul Simon’s „Graceland“ zu hören waren. Während Südafrika noch von der Düsternis der Apartheid heimgesucht wurde, begann die Weltkarriere der A-cappella-Formation. Seither sind Ladysmith Black Mambazo unterwegs, um die Botschaft von Frieden, Liebe und Harmonie rund um den Globus zu tragen. Nachdem sie sich 2005 mit dem Album „No Boundaries“ die Verbindung von europäischer Klassik mit afrikanischen Klängen erprobten, kehren Ladysmith Black Mambazo mit Long Walk To Freedom zurück zur Tradition der Mambazo-Songs. Mit 12 neu aufgenommen Lieder, die sie zuvor schon auf diversen Alben veröffentlicht haben (plus einem brandneuen Bonus Track), feiern Ladysmith den 12. Jahrestag der Einführung der Demokratie in der Republik Südafrika mit einer illustren Gästeschar, die in dem Traditional „Shosholoza“ gar zu einem Gipfeltreffen der größten südafrikanischen Musiker gerät, an dem Lucky Dube, Bhekumuzi, Luthuli, Vusi Mahsasela, Hugh Masekelam Nokukhanya, Phuzekhemisi und Thandiswa beteiligt sind. Die afrikanische Legenden, die teilweise außerhalb ihrer Heimat noch der Entdeckung harren, stehen für unsere Ohren so bekannte Namen wie Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLachlan, Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge und Joe McBride gegenüber. Ohne Kulturgrenzen überwinden zu müssen, stimmen sie ein in die Botschaft des Komponisten und Chor-Gründers Joseph Shabalala ein, der in seinen Liedern unermüdlich für das Selbstbestimmungsrecht und die Freiheit aller Menschen eintritt. In „Hello My Baby“ harmonieren im vokalen Wettstreit die im Kongo geborene Zap Mama und Ladysmith Black Mambazo miteinander. Melissa Etheridge veredelt „Diamonds On The Soles“, das ursprünglich auf „Graceland“ zu hören war, mit ihrem unwiderstehlichen Gesang, und Natalie Merchant gibt sich bei „Rain Rain Beautiful“ die Ehre. Die Verbindung von afrikanischen Chants mit der afroamerikanischen Gospelmusik manifestiert sich in der Traditional-Hymne „Amazing Grace“, in der sich die Country-Stimme von Emmylou Harris mit den anrührenden Harmonien der Mambazos verbindet. Have you got that?, fragt Joseph Shabala zu guter Letzt den Studio-Leiter, als er den improvisierten Lullaby-Song „Thula Thula“ erstmals ins anstimmte. Ein schöner Abschluss für ein Album, das mit einigen der berühmtesten und schönsten Songs von Ladydsmith Black Mambazo die 20. Wiederkehr ihres Erscheinens auf der Weltbühne feiert.

Two decades ago, Paul Simon introduced the musical genius and boundless spiritual energy of Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the pop music world via his groundbreaking 1986 recording, Graceland. Eight years later, due in large part to the efforts of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and other South African artists bearing witness to racial inequality in their homeland, the centuries-old practice of apartheid came to an end in South Africa.

In recognition of the twentieth anniversary of their ascendancy to the world stage and the dawning of democracy in South Africa twelve years ago, Ladysmith Black Mambazo released Long Walk To Freedom on Heads Up International. Nearly 11 months after its release date, the album scored two GRAMMY nominations – one for Best Contemporary World Music Album and another for Best Surround Sound Album.

The album is a collection of twelve new recordings of classic Mambazo songs, featuring guest vocal performances by some of the most progressive voices of the contemporary pop music scene: Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joe McBride, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant and Zap Mama. Also appearing on the guest roster are a virtual who’s who of South African artists: Lucky Dube, Bhekumunzi Luthuli, Vusi Mahlasela, Hugh Masekela, Nokukhanya, Phuezkhemisi, and Thandiswa.
