Josh White was undeniably during his lifetime one of the most enigmatic performers of blues and folk music to emerge from the United States. Born on the poor side of the track, White became one of America's most noted black entertainers, breaking through social and cultural barriers, and constantly reinventing himself, so that his career survived the changing musical tastes and trends of five decades. For almost half a century Josh White's musical talents and achievements shone bright like beacons. In the Twenties he was one of the youngest solo black artists in the 'race records' market, during the Thirties he became a major blues star - both on record and in live performances - while in the Forties he worked alongside jazz figures like Billie Holiday and was embraced by a white New York audience.
