EPOCHAL

Fassungslos, sprachlos - das waren wir, als wir diese Musik 1970 erstmals hörten. Dabei entstand dieses Album doch nur, um aus einem Vertrag herauszukommen. Die Fangemeinde diskutierte monatelang, ob Jimi dieses Album so je genehmigt hätte. Zumindest doch die erste Seite mit "Who Knows" und "Machine Gun". Denn es sind diese beiden Songs, die einen ähnlichen Meilenstein darstellen wie "Giant Steps" oder "Ascension" für den Jazz. Jetzt gerade sind wieder die damals schon kursierenden Mitschnitte aus den Proben zu den Fillmore Auftritten der Band of Gypsies erhältlich (The Baggy Rehearsals). Und man hört, wie sehr die Band an jeder Note feilt. Wie groß die Schwierigkeiten von Buddy Miles sind, das, was Hendrix von ihm will, umzusetzen. Am Ende schafft Miles es doch. Und heraus kommen zwei Songs von großer Dichte, Eindringlichkeit: dieser schwere, rollende Blues (Who Knows), mit einem unglaublichen Solo, das aus einem scheinbar nicht mehr enden wollenden Lauf besteht und aus "Machine Gun", bei dem Hendrix die Grenzen der E-Gitarre (auch nach Star-Spangeled-Banner) neu definiert.

Mittlerweile gibt es die kompletten vier Fillmore Auftritte auf CD, aber mit diesen beiden Songs hat man schon die Quintessenz.

Für den Fan ebenso wie für den Einsteiger gehört die "Band of Gypsies" ins Regal, selbst wenn auf der B-Seite nur noch zwei Songs wirklich herausragen.

dem Vor- Kommentar stimme ich voll zu ! ich habe die Vinyl- Fassung noch und bin ihr damals hinterher gelaufen bis ich sie endlich hatte ! Geringe Auflage und einfach nur "Epochal"
