Im Grunde war Jerry Lee Lewis immer ein Gospelsänger. Seine frühesten, besten Platten haben diese Leidenschaft offenbart; selbst dann, wenn er über Frauen und Liebe sang. Jerrys legendäres Streitgespräch mit Sam Phillips entstand während der Aufnahmesession von 'Great Balls Of Fire'. Sein ganzes musikalisches Leben war letztlich ein Tauziehen zwischen Gott und dem Teufel.
Es ist was dran, dass dies die besten Gospelaufnahmen sind, die Jerry jemals gemacht hat. 'Ich glaube an die traditionelle Religion!' ruft er aus und wird nicht müde, dies zu beweisen – mit kleinen, spontanen Predigten und Bekundungen zwischen einzelnen Stücken. Wie gut, dass Bänder mitliefen! Diese kaum irgendwo dokumentierten Aufnahmen vom Dezember 1970 entstanden drei Tage, nachdem er sich von weltlicher Musik abgekehrt hatte. Sie präsentieren Jerry mit seiner Tour-Band in einer kleinen Kirche auf dem Highway 41 in Memphis. Es gibt dabei auch humorvolle Momente, etwa wenn Jerry der Gemeinde seine aktuelle LP anpreist ('Ihr braucht das Album – und wir das Geld!'). Leider wusste bei seiner Plattenfirma niemand etwas mit den aufgenommenen Bändern anzufangen, darum blieben sie unveröffentlicht. Was schon vor rund 40 Jahren hätte passieren müssen, holt Bear Family dankenswerterweise jetzt nach. Der Begleittext des Sun-Historikers Hank Davis analysiert die Musik und präsentiert Ereignisse in Jerrys Leben, die zu diesen Mitschnitten an einem ganz bestimmten Sonntagmorgen geführt haben.
Bekanntlich kehrte Jerry innerhalb nur weniger Monate zu weltlicher Musik zurück. Aber diese Aufnahmen entstanden während eines magischen Augenblicks, sie sind unverzichtbar für jeden Jerry-Lee-Lewis-Fan. Die thematischen Inhalte darf man gern ausblenden und dafür seiner Leidenschaft zuhören – denn genau darum ging es immer in seinen besten Momenten.

At his core, Jerry Lee Lewis has always been a gospel singer. His earliest and best records have revealed that passion, even when he was singing about women and lovin'. Jerry's famous religious debate with Sam Phillips took place at the recording session for 'Great Balls Of Fire'. His musical life has always been a tug of war between God and the Devil.
The truth is, these may be the best gospel recordings Jerry ever made in his long career. 'I believe in that old time religion!', he shouts, and proceeds to show us why, with a little spontaneous preaching and testifying between selections. Thankfully, the tape was rolling. These barely documented recordings from December, 1970 were made three days after he renounced worldly music. They reveal Jerry working with his road band on the stage of a small church out on Highway 41 in Memphis. There are humorous moments too, as when Jerry flogs his latest LP to the congregation ('You need the album and we need the money'). But in the end, nobody at his record company knew what to do with these tapes and they were originally unissued. Thanks to Bear Family, the music receives the treatment it should have some 40 years ago. Accompanying notes by Sun historian Hank Davis examine the music and document the events in Jerry's life that led to these recordings on this particular Sunday morning.
As we all know, Jerry was back to singing worldly music within months. But these recordings were made at a magic moment. They are indispensible to any Jerry Lee Lewis fan. Forget their subject matter and listen to his passion. That's what Jerry's best music has always been about.
