Auch wenn die Bezeichnung "The Godfather of Alternative Country", mit der die britische Presse den Musiker betitelte, nicht ganz akkurat ist, so kommt sie jedoch von Herzen: Howe Gelb ist seit mehr als 25 Jahren das kreative Epizentrum in der sich ständig verändernden Formation Giant Sand. "Valley Of The Rain", das Debüt der Band von 1985, feiert 2010 sein 25. Jubiläum und markiert mit seinem Re-Release und der nachfolgenden Wiederveröffentlichung der gesammelten Werke von Giant Sand, Howe Gelb, Arizona AMP und The Band Of Blacky Ranchette rückblickend noch einmal den Punkt, an dem die musikalischen Visionen Gelbs begannen. Eine Werkschau, die 27 Alben umfasst und von September 2010 bis Juli 2011 realisiert wird, und die ins Gesicht des Konzepts "Genre" lacht, indem sie die südwest-amerikanischen Wurzeln von Howe mit Lo-Fi, Country, Jazz und Punk vermischt. Howe erklärt "Giant Sand ist eine Stimmung", als ob das die erstaunliche Spannweite seines überaus produktiven Outputs vereinfachen würde. 2010 erscheint außerdem mit "Blurry Blue Mountain" der Nachfolger von Giant Sands hochgelobtem Album "ProVisions" von 2008. Howe Gelb "Blurry Blue Mountain ist ein weiterer Meilenstein im Leben eines talentierten Musikers mit einem immensen Backkatalog, aus dem ein ganzer Schwarm von weltweit anerkannten Talenten und Kollaborationen hervorgegangen ist und der quasi im Vorbeigehen noch Künstler wie GRANDADDY und M. WARD entdeckt hat. Im Alter von 53 zeigt Howe Gelb noch immer eine profunde Beständigkeit und eine unerschütterliche Präsenz. Eine Wüste mit einer Quelle, die noch lange nicht ausgetrocknet ist.
