Als Eric Clapton im Januar 1992 seine gewohnte Stratocaster gegen eine akustische Martin tauschte, um das heute legendäre Unplugged-Album einzuspielen, galt er bereits als absoluter Meister der elektrischen Gitarre.
Das Live-Album zeigte den legendären Gitarristen in Begleitung einer kleinen Backing Band mit akustischen Versionen eigener Songs und einiger Blues-Standards. Nachdem das Album noch im gleichen Jahr veröffentlicht worden war, wurde es mit weltweit 19 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren und sechs Grammys, darunter »Record of the Year« und »Song of the Year«, zu einem unangefochtenen Blockbuster.
