Earth, Wind & Fire sind die bekannteste Formation der 70er und 80er Jahre. Mit ihrer Mischung aus Soul-, Funk- und Jazzelementen begeisterten die Musiker um die beiden Sänger Maurice White und Philip Bailey ein Millionenpublikum. 1972 wechselte die achtköpfige Mannschaft zu Columbia – eine gute Entscheidung. Dort förderte man erfolgreich das hohe musikalische Potential von Earth, Wind & Fire: Bereits 1973 gab es zum ersten Mal Gold für ein Album der Band. Die folgenden Longplays wurden regelmäßig mit Platin ausgezeichnet, u. a. die 1975 veröffentlichte Langrille „Gratitude“, zu deren Hitausbeute die Chartbreaker „Reasons“, „Sing A Song“, „Shining Star“ und „Can‘t Hide Love“ zählen.
