Black Celebration ist das fünfte Studioalbum von Depeche Mode und gilt als eines der düstersten und zugleich stimmungsvollsten Werke der Band. Alle elf Lieder wurden von Martin Gore geschrieben, vier Songs – A Question of Lust, Sometimes, It doesn’t matter und World Full of Nothing – singt er auch gleich selbst.
Mit dem Albumtitel „Black Celebration“ legten Depeche Mode eine falsche Fährte. Trotz seines düsteren Charakters geht es in den Songs der Platte weder um okkulte Handlungen noch um schwarze Messen. Stattdessen schreibt Martin Gore über Gefühle und die dunkle Seite des Leben, zu der auch eine große Portion Langeweile gehört. Am Ende eines schwarzen Tages können wir immer noch feiern, dass er endlich vorbei.
In ihrer Heimat erreichte „Black Celebration“ Platz 3 der UK-Charts. In Deutschland klettere das Album bis auf Platz zwei, in der Schweiz sogar auf Platz eins der Charts.
