Nach dem Erfolg von »Death Walks Behind You«, einem Auftritt bei Top Of The Pops und einer erfolgreichen Tour, war es Zeit für die neuen Stars von Atomic Rooster, ein drittes Album aufzunehmen.
Das Album ist das perfekte Beispiel einer Band, die sich weiterentwickelt. Weniger bombastisch als seine Vorgänger ist »In Hearing Of« fast schon funky. Die Texte sind – wie zu dieser Zeit im britischen Hardrock üblich – voll von Untergang und Verderben und hier und dort stoßen klassische Allusionen an die Oberfläche. Dagegen setzen Atomic Rooster die schmackhaften Keyboards von Vincent Crane und Melodien, die ins Ohr gehen.
Wenn man unbedingt das Genre von »In Hearing Of« bestimmen müsste, könnte man sagen, dass es nicht ganz Metal und nicht ganz Prog ist, aber dennoch bewegend und sehr gut umgesetzt. Obwohl das Album nicht ganz an den Klassiker-Status seines direkten Vorgängers anknüpfen kann, ist »In Hearing Of« ein kurzweiliges Album für Fans von Prog und Hardrock und vielleicht das letzte Atomic Rooster-Album, das einen Einfluss auf die Heavy Prog Szene hatte – bald sollte die Band von Uriah Heep, Hawkwind oder Gentle Giant überflügelt werden. Der Einfluss von »In Hearing Of« ist auch bei diesen Bands zu hören und setzt sich bis zu Bands wie Wolfmother fort.

Atomic Rooster was the brainchild of the late lamented Hammond organ genius Vincent Crane. Originally a member of the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, he set up his own dynamic group in 1969 that enjoyed hit singles and featured a succession of fine singers, guitarists and drummers. ‘In Hearing Of’ was the band’s third album, first released in 1971 and included vocalist Peter French on some tracks (who would later find fame with Leaf Hound). The rest of the line up has the excellent John Cann on guitar and Paul Hammond on drums. Among the eight original tracks are such amusing titles as ‘A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps the Pulse Rate Go Down’, which typified Vincent Crane’s nervy sense of humour. But the musicianship ensured that Atomic Rooster albums were taken very seriously by fans and ‘In Hearing Of’ has been hailed as an essential Prog Rock Classic. We have added a bonus track ‘Devil’s Answer’- a UK Top 40 hit in July 1971.
