Sie sind das Traumpaar der westafrikanischen Musikszene und in Frankreich die Entdeckung aus der ehemaligen Kolonie Mali. Amadou & Mariam haben sich seit ihrem Album Dimanche à Bamako aus dem Jahr 2005 einen Namen weit über die Grenzen ihrer Heimat hinaus gemacht. Ausgezeichnet mit einem Victóire de la musique (die französische Entsprechung für einen Echo).

Seither ist viel Zeit vergangen: Amadou & Mariam waren mit Coldplay und U2 auf Tour und jammten mit Pink Floyd-Gitarristen David Gilmour und Smiths-Gitarrero Johnny Marr. Sie traten bei der Friedensnobelpreis-Verleihung für Barack Obama auf und spielten bei den Eröffnungsfeiern der Fußballweltmeisterschaften in Deutschland (2006) und Afrika (2010). Manu Chao und Damon Albarn empfanden es als Ehre, Amadou & Mariam ihr Produzentenkönnen zur Verfügung zu stellen, und auf dem Afrika-Projekt Albarns, Africa Express, spielten sie mit vielen Größen der Rockmusik zusammen.

Wie keinem zweiten Künstlerpaar gelingt es Amadou & Mariam westliche Moderne mit afrikanischen Wurzeln zu verbinden, und auf Folila betrifft dies auch die globale Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern aus Afrika und der westlichen Welt. So stieß eine ganze Reihe von hochkarätigen Künstlern zu den Aufnahmen, die in New York und der malinesischen Hauptstadt Bamako stattfanden: In New York waren es Santigold, der Yeah Yeah Yeah-Gitarrist Nick Zinner, Tunde Adebimbe und Kyp Malone von TV On The Radio, Jake Shears von den Scissor Sisters, der britische Songwriter Ebony Bones und Rapper / Remixer Theophilus London, die als Gäste ins Studio kamen. In Bamaka waren es Weltmusik-Star Bassekou Kouyaté, Bassist Yao Dembélé, Keyboarder Idrissa Soumaoro und die Percussionisten Vieux et Boubacar Dembélé, die das Klangspektrum um afrikanische Instrumente erweiterten. Zusätzlich fand sich in Mali auch der französische Sänger Betrand Cantat (Ex-Noir Desir) im Studio ein, der Mundharmonika und Blues-Gitarre spielte.

Amadou hat immer wieder betont, dass es zu den anregendsten Erfahrungen eines Musikers gehört, seine Idee von Musik in Kollaborationen mit anderen Künstlern zu teilen. Eine Erfahrung, die den Kern von Folila, in der Sprache Bambara der Ausdruck für „Musik“, beschreibt. Marc-Antoine Moreau, langjähriger Produzent des Duos, erklärt: „Die ursprüngliche Idee war, zwei Alben aufzunehmen: Ein Crossover-Album in New York City und ein Album mit afrikanischen Musikern in Bamako.“ Amadou & Mariam entschieden sich am Ende für die dritte Möglichkeit: Beide Sessions auf einem Album organisch zu verbinden. Das Ergebnis ist Folila, eine reichhaltige Melange aus traditionell und modern, retro und futuristisch, organisch und elektronisch zugleich.

Over the course of the last several years, Amadou & Mariam’s music has become increasingly expansive, while remaining anchored by their trademark West African blues-rock. Manu Chao and Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn, in addition to their longtime producer / manager Marc-Antoine Moreau, have produced their recordings. In the same spirit of openness, the self-billed Blind Couple from Mali played a key role in Albarn’s multi-artist Africa Express concerts, and, more recently, performed informal L’Afrik C’est Chic jam sessions with various special guests in London and New York. Folila, their new album on Because Music / Nonesuch Records, epitomizes their embrace of collaboration, with contributions by Santigold, TV on the Radio, Nick Zinner, Theophilus London, Bassekou Kouyate, and others.

Folila is produced by Marc-Antoine Moreau, who has worked with the duo for the entirety of their professional career. They recorded the basic tracks in New York and then re-recorded them in Bamako. For the final album, they chose tracks from both sessions. From the first few seconds of the opening track, “Dougou Badia,” the music is instantly recognizable, with Amadou’s signature electric guitar soon joined by Mariam’s distinctive voice. Santigold, who co-wrote the song with Mariam, joins her on vocals. Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) complements Amadou on guitar on this and other tracks. Other notable collaborations include “Wily Kataso,” featuring TV on the Radio, and “Nebe Miri,” with the hip-hop artist Theophilus London. Bassekou Kouyate, another Malian artist who has accomplished a remarkable crossover in the US, plays ngoni on several songs. Folila is the first Amadou & Mariam studio album since Welcome to Mali, one of the most critically acclaimed recordings of 2009. An 8.4 review in Pitchfork said, “Inevitable is a good word for the stardom of Amadou & Mariam. People this amazingly talented and open to new sounds and ideas rarely remain obscure, especially after so many years honing their craft and building their catalog…This album is an affirmation of global connectivity and an emerging global culture that transcends and repurposes tradition as it sees fit—the sound of Mali merging with the world at large.” Indeed, the album won them their second Grammy nomination, a performance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” opening slots in stadium shows with Coldplay and U2, and plaudits from the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, TIME, SPIN, Rolling Stone, FADER, and many others.
