Der 12jährige Waisenjunge Hugo Cabret lebt, seitdem sein Vater, ein talentierter Uhrenmacher, bei einem Brand ums Leben kam, auf dem Dachboden hinter einer großen Bahnhofsuhr. Dort hilft er seinem Onkel, sämtliche Uhren des Pariser Bahnhofs zu warten. Als dieser an den Folgen seiner Alkoholsucht stirbt, macht Hugo täglich allein seinen Kontrollweg durch die Bahnhofshallen, um sie zu reparieren und aufzuziehen. Dabei muss er sich vor dem strengen Stationsvorsteher in Acht nehmen, der keine Chance auslässt, seinem Geheimnis auf die Spur zu kommen.
