Die Dritte Symphonie (1954-57) wurde am 2. Dezember 1957 in der Royal Festival Hall in London vom Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra unter John Pritchard uraufgeführt. In drei Sätzen fordert die Partitur Piccoloflöte, doppelte Holzbläser, vier Hörner, drei Trompeten, drei Posaunen, Tuba, Pauken und Streicher. Gemäß der ursprünglichen Programmnotiz des Komponisten "hat der erste Satz zwei Hauptthemen, von denen das erste von den Violinen, Bratschen, Flöten und dem Fagott gleich zu Beginn des Stückes gespielt wird. Später wird das zweite Thema zunächst von der Oboe in Begleitung der Violinen vorgetragen. Gegen Ende des Satzes wechselt das Tempo abrupt [von Allegro zu Vivace], und dasselbe Material wird als Scherzo entwickelt. Der zweite Satz [Passacaglia], der elegischen Charakter hat, ist eine Reihe von [zwanzig] Variationen, die auf einer Reihe von Akkorden basieren, die mehr als ein melodisches Thema sind. Der [Haydneske] letzte Satz basiert auf drei Hauptthemen und könnte locker als Rondo bezeichnet werden". Die Sibelius - artige Unterthematik des Werkes führt Arnold auf die teleskopische Struktur des ersten Satzes und das Vorhandensein "eines wiederkehrenden Leitmotivs" zurück, das an Sibelius' Fünfte Sinfonie erinnert, ebenso wie an die d-Moll-Sinfonie von Franck (die er beide innerhalb von zwei Wochen im Februar 1944 mit dem London Philharmonic Orchestra spielte).
Im Auftrag von William Glock und der BBC wurde die volkstümlich anmutende Vierte Sinfonie, die am 13. Juli 1960 in Thursley, einem Dorf in Surrey zwischen Godalming und der Devil's Punch Bowl, vollendet wurde, am 2. November 1960 in der Royal Festival Hall vom BBC Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung des Komponisten uraufgeführt.
In vier Sätzen, wobei das Scherzo an zweiter Stelle steht, fordert die Partitur Piccoloflöte, doppelte Holzbläser, Kontrafagott, vier Hörner, drei Trompeten, drei Posaunen, Tuba, Pauken, Schlagzeug, Celesta, Harfe und Streicher. "Diese Symphonie", so schrieb der Arnold in seiner Programmnotiz für die Uraufführung, "ist für ein normales Symphonieorchester komponiert [aber mit] zusätzlichen Schlaginstrumenten, die seit Jahren in der westindischen und südamerikanischen Populärmusik verwendet werden [einschließlich Bongos, Marimbaphonen und Tom-Toms]".

The Sibelian sub-plot of the work Arnold attributes to the telescoped structure of the first movement, and the presence of "a recurrent leitmotif" redolent of Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, likewise the Franck D minor Symphony (both of which, within a fortnight, he played with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in February 1944).
