»Monk’s Dream« ist die erste LP, die Thelonious Monk im Jahr 1963 via Columbia Records veröffentlichte. Das »Monk Quartet« besteht hier aus Charlie Rouse (Tenor-Saxophon), John Ore (Bass) und Frankie Dunlop (Drums) und natürlich Thelonious Monk am Piano.

Das Album wurde im Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City im November 1962 aufgenommen.

Monk

Ich habe beruflich nichts mit Musik zu tun. Ich bin in keiner Art und Weise Musikexperte. Ich habe 5 Monk Platten. Auf mich wirkt Thelonious Monk immer, als würde er gegen die Band spielen. Bass und Schlagzeug scheinen zusammenzuhalten, während Monk spielt wie, als würde er sagen wollen, "ihr langweilt mich, ich mach das so..." und Charlie Rouse ist sein Verbündeter. Mal spielt er mit ihm, mal kann er selbst zerstören und mal betören. Es ist Experimentaltechno 30 Jahre vor seiner Erfindung. Spannend, destruktiv, wundervoll für den, der es mag. Monks Dream ist alles was Monk ausmacht, auf den Punkt gebracht. Die Impexpressung ist wellenlos, sauber, all Analog und klingt sehr gut. Ich liebe das Album und diese Pressung hat mir nie das Gefühl gegeben, das ich noch die teurere One Step Pressung von Mofi bräuchte.

Jazz hin - Jazz her,

unter dem Deckmantel des Jazz wird hier eher schlecht gespielte Musik als Albumklassiker verkauft. So groß kann der musiktheoretische Überbau (jazz canon) gar nicht sein, damit ich die hier gebotene Musik irgendwie gut finden könnte. Alles großartige Musiker auf diesem Album, das macht das Ergebnis umso trauriger. Für Exzentriker geeignet :)!

Rezension unverständlich

Wenn man noch nicht soweit ist, sollte man sich doch eher mit leichterer Kost befassen. Wenn ich die Produktempfehlungen sehe, kann ich dahinter keinen Monk Hörer vermuten. Alleine "Just a Gigolo" ist schon die Platte wert. Man muß Monk ja nicht mögen, trotzdem war er ein aussergewöhnlicher Musiker. Die Stan Getz finde ich z.B. langweilig. trotzdem ist Stan Getz ein hervorragender Musiker. Für Monk muß man sicherlich kein Exzentriker sein. PaZa

An inspired "Bright Mississipi"

The quartet with Charlie Rouse (ts), John Ore (b) and Frankie Dunlop (b). 8 titles plus 4 alternate takes. Good stereo recording (1962, New York) with a good "stage" reproduction. This is part of the 25-CD box set hereunder. Consider this before buying it!
