Sagenhaft

Wow ! Was für eine Aufnahme. Da mag man denken, ok, ein paar prominente Fusion-Jazz-Musiker, die mal schnell ein paar Standards aufgenommen haben, davon haben wir schon genug. Falsch! Erstens sind die Stücke sehr clever arrangiert (z.B. Lover Man, bekannt als Ballade, hier als flotter Latin), und zweitens ist das eine Offenbarung, diese drei diese Musik spielen zu hören. Sie können es, und zwar richtig gut !
Von Stanley weiss man zwar, dass es früher schon akustischen Mainstream-Jazz gespielt hat, immerhin mal damit angefangen hat, aber man hat den Eindruck, er hat sich deutlich weiterentwickelt, seine walking lines und Soli sind vom Feinsten. Patrice Rushen kennt man vor allem als Sängerin mit Hits wie "Forget me nots" aus den früher 80er. Aber auch sie hat als Jazz-Pianistin angefangen und sich seitdem wohl immer weiter entwickelt. Ich habe sie vor 5 Jahren mal live mit Lee Ritenour gesehen und kann nur sagen: was für eine begnadete Musikerin. Und Leon Chancler aka Ndugu? Er kann offenbar alles spielen, hat mit Miles, Weather Report, Santana, George Duke und vielen anderen gespielt, nur puren Jazz habe ich von ihm noch nicht gehört, aber auch das kann er meisterlich.
Auf der beiliegenden DVD, die eine halbe Stunde läuft, sind neben Interviews vier vollständige Tracks, live im Studio gespielt. Klasse. Übrigens wird die Band auf der DVD als Stanley Clarke Trio angekündigt, auf der CD als Rushen-Clarke-Chancler, was korrekt ist, alle drei sind gleichberechtigte Künstler.
Fünf der 10 Titel dieser 2001 aufgenommenen CD wurden schon mal im Rahmen einer Doppel-CD Vertical Jazz zusammen mit anderen Gruppen veröffentlicht. Selbst wenn man diese bereits haben sollte, die weiteren fünf Titel und die DVD lohnen die Anschaffung dieses erst 2007 erschienenen Albums. Nochmal: wow !
