Aufgenommen Ende Mai 1970 in den Apostolic Studios in New York, ist "Fortune Smiles" eine Jazz-Fusion-LP, auf der alle fünf Musiker gleichermaßen mit ihren herausragenden musikalischen Qualitäten experimentieren. Dieses Album war ein Wendepunkt für McLaughlin, der zu dieser Zeit auch mit Miles Davis spielte, kurz bevor er mit dem Mahavishnu Orchestra seinen kreativen Höhepunkt erreichte.
