Alt-Saxophonist Johnny Hodges war möglicherweise der wichtigste Solo-Spieler und Sideman des Duke Ellington Orchestra von 1928 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1970. Er konnte nicht nur mit den besten Swing-Saxophonisten mithalten und meisterhaft Blues interpretieren – seine fantastischen Balladen wurden nie übertroffen. Seine Mitstreiter auf „Blues A Plenty“ aus dem Jahr 1958 waren Ben Webster am Tenor-Saxophon, Roy Elridge an der Trompete, Vic Dickenson an der Posaune, Billy Strayhorn am Piano, Jimmy Wood am Bass und Sam Woodyard am Schlagzeug.
