Joe Henderson hatte seinen Höhepunkt erreicht, als er "Inner Urge", sein viertes Album für Blue Note, im November 1964 aufnahm. Nach einer Reihe von Quintett-Terminen war dies das erste Quartett-Album des Tenorsaxophonisten, das mit McCoy Tyner am Klavier, Bob Cranshaw am Bass und Elvin Jones am Schlagzeug eine außergewöhnliche Besetzung aufwies.
Das Quartett liefert ein abwechslungsreiches Set, das aus drei Henderson-Originalen besteht, darunter das bemerkenswerte Titelstück und das monkische "Isotope", sowie eine wunderschöne Ballade von Duke Pearsons "You Know I Care" und einen flotten Swing durch Cole Porters Night and Day".
Diese Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition wurde von Kevin Gray von den Original-Masterbändern gemastert und auf 180g Vinyl bei Optimal gepresst.
