Herbie Hancocks viertes Blue-Note-Album mit Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter und Tony Williams definierte den Sound, der sein Jazzwerk bis heute prägen sollte: Funk, delikate Harmonien und experimentelle Improvisationen, die alle irgendwie zusammenwirken. "One Finger Snap" und natürlich "Cantaloupe Island" sind zu Klassikern des Jazz geworden.
»Empyrean Isles« war 1964 Herbie Hancocks viertes Soloalbum für Blue Note. Obwohl der Pianist mit ‹Watermelon Man« von seinem Debütalbum »Takin' Off« bereits einen echten Hit gelandet hatte, etablierte er sich erst mit »Empyrean Isles« endgültig als eigenständiger Künstler. Wie auf den vorangegangenen Alben stellte Hancock ausschließlich eigene Kompositionen vor, aus denen vor allem der zeitlose Hit »Cantaloupe Island« hervorstach.
