Mingus: Oh Yeah! A Mingus without Dolphy and Curson

This is a very weak release of Mingus, recorded 1961, after Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson had left the band of this all-time genius because he did not pay but only beat them. 1960 with Dolphy and Curson was the year of Mingus' best recordings regarding the Coleman-inspired no-piano linear improvisative line of Mingus' enormous creativity. Here he not only (1) lacks Dolphy and Curson, a loss he never could overcome, but makes more mistakes: (2) He replaces himself on double bass with Doug Watkins, what a loss! (3) He still does not seem to have clearly understood why Coleman had to get rid of the piano and plays it himself. With his comping he introduces chords into the linear improvisation, distroying everthing. He made fun of Coleman that Coleman would not be able to play a C major scale, now he makes fun of himself unknowingly. Of course, Bach experimented with harmonic structures in linear contrapunctual music and Beethoven experimented with the alternation fof harmonic and linear music in his late piano sonatas, in particular no. 31 where we find harmonic-fugal-harmonic-fugal-harmonic in the last sentence. I honor Mingus as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, but he is not able to do the impossible combination of harmonic music like bebop and a linear contrapunctual music in the style of Coleman and the Mingus-Dolphy-Curson-Richmond band did in 1960. Even Bach and Beethoven had only limited success with this combination. All in all, this is the Mingus album absolutely only for Mingus historians, completely failing with his trial to combine these two worlds of music that are harder to combine than the worlds of the living and the dead. This recording is no fun, whereas all 1960 releases were all such an incredibly great fun to listen to.
