Art Blakeys Hard-Bop-Klassiker "The Big Beat" aus dem Jahr 1960 stellte eine der großartigsten Besetzungen der Jazz Messengers vor: der legendäre Schlagzeuger zusammen mit dem Trompeter Lee Morgan, dem Tenorsaxofonisten Wayne Shorter, dem Pianisten Bobby Timmons und der Bassistin Jymie Merritt.
Drei der sechs Stücke hier wurden von Shorter komponiert, darunter "Lester Left Town", aber das Album ist am besten bekannt für eine unvergessliche Version von Timmons' Dauerhit "Dat Dere"
Diese Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition wurde von Kevin Gray von den Original-Masterbändern gemastert und auf 180g Vinyl bei Optimal gepresst.
