Die Komponistin, Klarinettistin, Sängerin und Pädagogin Angel Bat Dawid kündigt heute die Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Werks Requiem For Jazz an. Die 12-sätzige Suite wurde komponiert, arrangiert und zum Teil von Dialogen aus Edward O. Blands Film The Cry of Jazz von 1959 inspiriert. Das Album ist eine weitreichende Abhandlung über die afroamerikanische Geschichte von einem ihrer scharfsinnigsten Erzähler.
Die Musik des Projekts wurde ursprünglich 2019 auf dem Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago uraufgeführt, wo Angel ein fünfzehnköpfiges Mehrgenerationen-Instrumentalensemble aus schwarzen Musikern aus der gesamten kreativen Gemeinschaft Chicagos dirigierte, zusammen mit einem vierköpfigen Chor (mit Sängern des Black Monument Ensemble) sowie Tänzern und bildenden Künstlern.
Die Aufnahmen der Aufführung wurden anschließend von Angel abgemischt und nachproduziert, der Zwischenspiele, Gesang und zusätzliche Klänge hinzufügte. Neben der Transkription eines Stücks aus dem Film spielt Requiem For Jazz auch auf The Cry of Jazz an, und zwar durch Beiträge von Marshall Allen und Knoel Scott vom Sun Ra Arkestra im letzten Satz des Albums, die Ende 2020 im historischen Arkestral Institute of Sun Ra in Philadelphia aufgenommen wurden.
