Al DiMeolas zweites Album »Elegant Gypsy« (1977) wurde zu einem der prägenden Alben der Fusion. Noch als Mitglied von Return To Forever lieferte DiMeola nach »Land Of The Midnight Sun« sein zweites Solo-Album ab und arbeitete mit den Jazz-Rock-Giganten Steve Gadd, Jan Hammer und Anthony Jackson zusammen. Er holt sogar den Flamenco-Superstar Paco De Lucia für »Mediterranean Sundance« ins Boot, einen Song, der den Stil vorwegnimmt, zu dem sich DiMeola schließlich entwickeln würde: Latin angehauchte akustische Zauberei. Elegant Gypsy wurde in den Vereinigten Staaten mit Gold ausgezeichnet.
