Das Album, produziert und arrangiert von dem berühmten Charles Stepney, war eine Bühne für den in Chicago geborenen Singer-Songwriter Callier. Sein Albumdebüt auf dem Prestige-Label gab er 1968 mit The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier, das etwa drei Jahre zuvor fertiggestellt worden war. Danach wechselte er zu Cadet, dem Jazz-Imprint von Chess Records, wo 1972 das Set Occasional Rain erschien, bevor What Color Is Love veröffentlicht wurde.
Das Album gilt als Calliers Meisterwerk, als das beste des Chicagoer Soulsängers.
