Am 4. Januar 2013, eine knappe Woche nach seinem 60. Geburtstag, veröffentlicht Joe Lovano mit "Cross Culture" sein nunmehr 23. Blue-Note-Album. Es ist zugleich das dritte Werk in Folge, das der legendäre Saxophonist und Komponist mit seinem von der Kritik äußerst geschätzten Quintett US Five aufgenommen hat, zu dem sich bei sechs der insgesamt elf Tracks als Gastmusiker der aufstrebende Blue-Note-Gitarrist Lionel Loueke hinzugesellt hat.
Das mit zwei Schlagzeugern ungewöhnlich besetzte Quintett besteht ansonsten aus dem Pianisten James Weidman, am Bass wechseln sich Esperanza Spaulding (selbst eine grandiose Solokünstlerin) und Peter Slavov ab und am Schlagzeug firmieren Otis Brown und Francisco Mila. Bereits für die ersten beiden Alben von Joe Lovano US Five, "Folk Art" (2009) und "Bird Songs" (2011), erntete die Formation wahre Lobeshymnen. Sowohl das Jazzmagazin Down Beat als auch die Vereinigung der US-amerikanischen Jazzjournalisten bezeichneten die Alben als jeweils beste ihres Fachs, letztgenannte die Interpretationen von Charlie-Parker-Kompositionen sogar als beste Aufnahme des Jahres.
Mit "Cross Culture" zieht Lovano nun ein künstlerisches Fazit seiner ewigen Suche nach einer universellen musikalischen Sprache und präsentiert in zehn Eigenkompositionen und einer feinen Interpretation von Billy Strayhorns "Star-Crossed Lovers" sein vielgestaltes Können und nutzt dazu auch seine exorbitante Sammlung von Instrumenten. "Seit meinen ersten Tourneen in den späten Siebzigern habe ich Instrumente gesammelt, aus Asien, Afrika, dem Mittleren Osten, Ost- und Westeuropa, Nord- und Südamerika", sagt Lovano, der hier eben nicht nur auf seinem angestammten Tenorsaxophon, sondern auch auf dem G-Mezzo-Sopran, dem Taragot, dem Aulochrome und diversen exotischen Percussion-Instrumenten zu bewundern ist.
Vom spirituellen Schönklang solcher Tracks wie "Myths And Legends" (Neuauflage einer älteren Auftragsarbeit für das String Trio of New York) und perkussiven Kapriolen wie "Drum Chant" bis hin zu frischen BeBop-Preziosen à la "52nd Street" in "Royal Roost" reicht das stilistische Spektrum: Rhythmische Komplexität trifft auf intuitives Harmonieverständnis. Den krönenden Abschluss bildet mit "PM" eine Hommage an seinen langjährigen Weggefährten Paul Motian. Mit dem legendären Schlagzeuger, der letztes Jahr im Alter von 80 Jahren starb, hatte Lovano noch bis kurz vor dessen Tod gespielt.

Joe Lovano will release Cross Culture, his 23rd Blue Note recording and the third consecutive release by his critically acclaimed quintet, Us Five. The album is an 11-track tour de force that presents 10 of Lovano’s original compositions along with a stunning interpretation of the Billy Strayhorn ballad “Star Crossed Lovers.”
Augmenting his core group (pianist James Weidman, bassists Esperanza Spalding or Peter Slavov, and drummers Otis Brown III and Francisco Mela) with the daring West African guitarist—and fellow Blue Note artist—Lionel Loueke, Lovano delivers his most fully realized representation of a career-long quest to explore the notion of universal musical language.
“Since I started to tour in the late ‘70s, I’ve collected instruments from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe, and North and South America,” says Lovano, who, in addition to his instantly recognizable tenor saxophone, improvises on G-mezzo soprano, tarogato, and aulochrome, and plays an array of percussion—bells and shakers, an Israeli paddle drum, and a Nigerian slit drum called an oborom. “I’ve spent a lifetime feeling the passion of experiencing the spirits in the sounds of the collective ancestors in these instruments, creating music but feeling like the earth. It’s coming through in my compositions and in the way we play together.”
Loueke, who himself combines exhaustive knowledge of harmony and folk forms, contributes seamlessly and egolessly to six pieces. “Lionel doesn’t just play the guitar,” Lovano says. “He freely integrates himself with the rhythm section and with me in the front line, and shares the space in a personal way.”
The album ends with an expansive performance of Lovano’s original “PM,” inspired by master drummer-composer Paul Motian, his frequent collaborator from 1981 until his death two months before the recording. Like everything that has preceded it, the performance, in Lovano’s words, “combines the harmonic and rhythmic structures of modern jazz in a free-flowing way, with a tribal energy, tying together things about the world of music, beyond just categories of jazz.”
