1997 feierte Dave Brubeck - eine Persönlichkeit die aus dem Jazz nicht mehr wegzudenken ist - in Moskau seinen siebenundsiebzigsten Geburtstag. Bald 80 Jahre Jazzgeschichte, Geschichten voller Engagement und Impressionen, voller Kunst und Virtuosität, voller Frische und vor allem Musik. "So What´s New?" lautet der Titel seines neuen Albums. Eine Frage, die sich leicht beantworten läßt: Es gibt nichts Neues, denn alles, was je mit dem Jazz verbunden werden kann und verbunden wurde ist bereits geschehen. Neu ist nur noch diese aktuelle Sammlung von bisher noch nicht aufgenommenen, geschweige denn publizierten Stücken. Es fällt schwer, einzelne Titel von "So What´s New?" hervorzuheben. "So What´s New?" ist schlicht e i n Höhepunkt. Dave Brubeck, widmete sich auf dem neuen Album altbekannter Strukturen, die nur in dieser Qualität und mit dem Namen Brubeck in Verbindung zu bringen sind. Ähnlich wie die in den 60´er Jahren veröffentlichte Platte "Time Out" (mit dem Klassiker "Take Five") zeichnet sich auch hier die einmalige Fähigkeit ungewöhnliche Taktarten, klassische Formen ("Chorale" – Hommage an Johann Sebastian Bach) und eine genussreiche Gruppendynamik zu fusionieren. There are a brilliant variety of tunes that reflect many facets of Brubeck’s musical interests. “Chorale” comes from Dave’s admiration of J. S. Bach and is adapted from part of his “Chromatic Fantasy.” “Fourth of July” is a study in fourths and makes a great jazz tune, while “Her Name is Nancy,” a harmonically and rhythmically complex tune, is hard to play but easy on the ears. “Marian McPartland,” a tribute to the esteemed pianist / educator, has a bounce and catchy melody which stays with you. There are countless treats on this CD.

There is always something to look forward to from the indefatigable Dave Brubeck, still going strong and influencing the music he has helped shape.
