Dieser 19-fache Grammy-Gewinner ist einer der letzten großen amerikanischen Crooner, ein Song-Stylist, dessen Name zu recht in einem Atemzug mit Frank Sinatra genannt wird. Anthony Dominick Benedetto kam 1926 in Queens, New York, zur Welt. Schon während seiner Schulzeit sang er in Clubs und auch später in der US Army glänzte er als Unterhalter.
1949 entdeckte Bob Hope den jungen Sänger, der sich damals noch Joe Bari nannte, und riet ihm seinen Namen erneut zu ändern. Die Plattenfirma Columbia gab ihm einen Vertrag und Tony Bennett machte nun eine steile Karriere, die hier mit seinen ersten 19 Original-LPs dokumentiert wird.
Zwischen 1951 und 1967 war er mit 43 Titeln in den amerikanischen Pop-Charts zu finden. Bennett gehört noch heute zu den populärsten und erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Künstlern und hat über 50 Millionen Tonträger verkauft. Im September 2014 erschien sein vorerst letztes Album, das er zusammen mit Lady Gaga aufnahm.
