Audiophile quality - Nice piece of chamber music

Really much more than a compilation!

This boxset offers a detailed story of the evolution of sacred music, from ancient ages to modern times. The booklet is very detailed.
Even if you already have some records in the box, consider the low price and buy it before it is sold out!

A short CD for GG fans

Recorded in 1974, the sound quality is pretty good. More modern recordings could provide a better restitution of the cello. Total time is 31:36.

Outstanding value for the price

The interpretation of Murray Perahia remains quite classical, in order to remain a reference. Quality of sound is quite good. The booklet is not very detailed, but provides the necessary information.

Gould Bernstein : a summit meeting

... but the recording engineer was not at the same level.
"This was the concerto with which Gould gave his orchestral début, playing its first movement on 8 may 1961." This recording was recorded on March 20, 1961. The 4th concertowas played by GG 29 times in public!
CD included in the "Original Jacket Collection", a 80 CD-set.

Relaxing and leading to meditation

The music seems so natural from the piano played by Mr Pogorelich.
This CD is in the first low price box set produced by DG to celebrate its 111th birthday. This is interesting to consider!

Outrstanding boxed set

A very inexpensive way to rediscover historical recordings of Benny Carter, benny Goodman, Charlie Christian, Roy Elrdidge, Duke Ellington small groups, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster and many others.
A 143 page booklet (which can be seen under pdf format from the jpc site) provides every detail of each recording session.
Sound quality varies from one tune to another.

Django Reinhardt is alive

Charlie Mingus called Philip Catherine, recorded here in 1979, as Young Django. This Cd makes the Django Reinhardt music even younger. All 9 tiltes were written by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli and are standards. The dual guitar play from Larry Corryel and Philip Catherine, the bass line from Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, the sponteneous and jovial violin of Grapelli at his best make this record a reference and a dream. Moreover, the quality of the recording is very detailed and without any flaw, like MPS records used to be. I write the last sentence of the leaflet: "It seems unnecessary to add that the music on this record is non-electric. As Stephance put it: "No electricity. Only gas".
One of my best 20 CDs since I listen to it since 1991 with the same emotion, really. It is a strange fact that this CD is not available without the Japan import!

I am addicted to Rassinfosse's music

The trio is well equilibrated. The sound recording is very good.
Nice work from a not-so-known label (Nagel Heyer) outside Germany.
11 original tiltles composed by Ignatzek or Roditi, which remain quite cool and classical. Very pleasant to be heard!
Good variety of styles on this CD: blues, latin, bop, ...

A good complement for Nielsen's discography

Good value for the price in this 2 CD compilation. Worth to buy it for the Violin Concerto which should deserve a greater audience.
The booklet is very short.

Very nice compilation of original concertos!

Exceptional value for the price ratio. I agree with the previous comment. No printed booklet but a detailed book on the composers.
You will not be disappointed by the recording quality which is one you may expect from 1970-2000 recordings.

Callas is Callas!

A booklet with the distribution, track listing and recording data is provided but without the libretti, which is quite normal for such a budget price.
The sound quality is poor to good for historical recordings. As they are presented as studio recordings, this may appear a bit disappointing in some cases.

Stacey Kent at her best

This is a nice compilation of recordings under the previously released pieces under Candid Records label.
This CD sounds much more better that the SK Collection I... but I still have to buy Collection III.

An historical recording

Just remind that these famous musicians have recorded the 12 pieces in 3 sessions, in Bew York City, from 1949 to 1950! Miles Davis appears to be the leader of the famous nonet (JJ Johnson, Lee Konitez, Gerry Mulligan, Max Roauch ou Kenny Clarke).
The recordings have been processed by Rudy Van Gelder who tranferreds the masters into digital.

A treasure of history, culture and music

As usual, in a providential manner, Jordi Savall delivers his Christmas gift under the form of a nice multilingual book , 3 full CDs and a bonus DVD! An happy way to learn foreign languages!
The CD recording are of the top quality (there are SACD).
The music focuses (which was unexpected to me from the Borgia title) on Turkish and Italian music from XV and XVI centuries.
The program, is varied.

Raconte-moi... Encore! Again and again!

This CD is composed of 12 titles taken from the French contemporary standards (with some exceptions, like "La Venus du mélo", which is original), sung in French, with a perfect diction (with a little charming accent).
The arrangements of these songs are well studied, with a variety of styles, which makes this CD much more enjoyable than SK Collection 1, to my humble opinion.
The percussions and double bass are very well balanced and studied. The recording will satisfy audiophiles.

A good compilation

This is a nice CD. A compilation from 12 titles from the standards. If you want to buy just one CD of Stacey Kent, i would prefer to buy "SK Collection II" or "Breakfast on the morning tram" which are more "contrasted" and "original" in the arrangements.
I think that jazz enthusiasts will unavoidably become a fan and will buy most of the recordings: it could be recommended to buy the original recordings.

Diapason d'or 2010: a very interesting collection of piano pieces inspired by Chopin and played with talent and emotion.
A very original gift!
