Die Komposition von Un ballo in maschera bereitete Verdi viele Probleme. Was als Oper mit dem Titel Gustavo III. begann, unterlag der Zensur durch die neapolitanischen und römischen Behörden, so dass das Libretto, der Handlungsort und der Titel geändert wurden. Das Thema ist jedoch immer noch der Mord an Riccardo (Gustavo) auf dem Maskenball, verpackt in eine musikalische Sprache, in der die Ernsthaftigkeit der italienischen Oper mit französischer Lebhaftigkeit vermischt wird. Der Aufbau der Oper ist in den großen Terzetten sorgfältig symmetrisch, und die Themen Pflicht, Vergnügen, Drama und Humor werden mit meisterhafter Klarheit wiedergegeben.
