The Cenci (1951–52) ist Havergal Brians opernhafte Umsetzung von Shelleys grausamer Geschichte von Inzest und Vatermord im Italien der Renaissance. In der Partitur heißt es einfach »Oper in acht Szenen«, aber große Melodien kommen selten vor; Stattdessen spiegeln seine dunklen Farben Shelleys Faszination für den Kampf zwischen Gut und Böse wider.
Stilistisch gesehen handelt es sich um eine ungewöhnliche, aber äußerst wirkungsvolle Mischung: ein Musikdrama, das sich auf die intensive Darstellung von Shelleys Text konzentriert, wobei der deklamatorische Stil der Gesangslinien an neuere Oratorien wie Strawinskys Oedipus Rex und Honeggers Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher erinnert und der freizügige Orchestersatz so etwas wie eine Gesangssymphonie erzeugt.
