Für das Album hatte der Tenorsaxofonist 1966 vier Eigenkompositionen und einen Standard von Duke Pearson ganz im Stile von »Birth Of The Cool« für ein hochkarätiges Oktett arrangieren lassen. Und ähnlich wie der berühmte Miles-Davis-Klassiker erschien auch »A Slice Of The Top« erst viele Jahre nach seiner Einspielung zum ersten Mal und gilt heute als absolutes Meisterwerk.
