Kurz nach der Einspielung des Albums »A Swingin' Affair« im August 1962 war der Tenorsaxofonist Dexter Gordon nach Europa übergesiedelt, wo er die nächsten vierzehn Jahre sesshaft werden sollte. Erst 1965 kehrte er für einen Besuch in die USA zurück, um sein letztes Album für Blue Note einzuspielen, das er treffend ‹Gettin' Around« betitelte. Das Album markierte die erste Zusammenarbeit mit dem Vibraphonisten Bobby Hutcherson, dessen älterer Bruder Teddy Dexters bester Jugendfreund war.
