Mit dem Album »Art of the Mandolin« präsentiert Avi Avital die Mandoline, wie er es noch nie zuvor getan hat: »Ich wollte die – unvollendete – Geschichte eines Instruments erzählen, das gleichzeitig vertraut und unbekannt ist.« So ist eine Hommage an die Mandoline und ihr vielfältiges Repertoire entstanden.

Aufgenommen mit dem Venice Baroque Orchestra, der Harfenistin Anneleen Lenaerts, dem Gitarristen Sean Shibe, dem Cembalisten Yizhar Karshon und der Theorbistin Ophira Zakai hat der Grammy prämierte Mandolinenvirtuose aus Israel erstmals ausschließlich Originalkompositionen seines Instruments für das Album ausgewählt.

»Diese Aufnahme spiegelt sowohl die Vergangenheit der Mandoline als auch ihre Gegenwart wider. Ich wollte das Spektrum der Mandolinenmusik in der klassischen Tradition vorstellen«, sagt der Musiker, der selbst viele neue Mandolinenwerke in Auftrag gegeben und uraufgeführt hat. »Es ist mein erstes Album, in dem alle Stücke Originalkompositionen für Mandoline sind.«

»Art of the Mandolin« ist ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte des Instruments und dessen Repertoire. »Als ich vor fast 20 Jahren begann, Konzerte mit klassischem Repertoire zu geben, war mein Instrument ein Kuriosum«, sagt Avital. »Um es in das Programm wichtiger Konzerte aufzunehmen, musste ich immer wieder argumentieren, dass die Mandoline ein Publikum verdient.« Inzwischen hat der Musiker in fast allen renommierten Konzertsälen und mit vielen internationalen Spitzenorchestern gespielt und der Mandoline so einen festen Platz in der Klassikszene gesichert.
