Ursprünglich im 15. Jahrhundert angesiedelt, wird Tschaikowskis Die Zauberin in dieser innovativen Inszenierung auf die heutige Zeit übertragen. Die charismatische, emanzipierte Nastassja, die die Annäherungsversuche des verschlagenen Mamirov zurückweist, sieht sich den unerbittlichen Kräften der traditionellen Werte in einer Gesellschaft gegenüber, die durch die Spaltung zwischen liberalen Freiheiten und religiösen Orthodoxien zerrissen ist. Das tragische Ende verschlingt alle. Diese Produktion war ein triumphaler Erfolg – »Am Ende Begeisterungsstürme, wie sie selbst an der Oper Frankfurt selten sind« (Neue Musikzeitung) – sowohl für die Inszenierung als auch für die Darsteller, wobei die Sopranistin Asmik Grigorian als »Wunder« und der Bariton Iain MacNeil als »Weltklasse« gefeiert wurden.
