»L'Italiana in Londra« war der erste internationale Erfolg von Domenico Cimarosa, dessen Uraufführung im Jahr 1778 das Publikum in ganz Europa begeisterte. Später wurde die Oper vom Erfolg des »Matrimonio segreto« in den Schatten gestellt und ist bis heute eher eine Seltenheit auf der Bühne.
Das heitere »Intermezzo in musica» spielt in einem Londoner Hotel und enthält raffinierte Arien, Duette und Ensembles, die die Handlung vorantreiben, die von einer vereitelten Liebe, Streit und Missverständnissen handelt.
Regisseur R.B. Schlather hat an der Frankfurter Oper das Werk als charmante, raffinierte, sehr lustig romantische Komödie inszeniert.

Die Geschichte handelt von vereitelter Liebe, Streit und Missverständnissen. L'Italiana in Londra wurde von Regisseur R. B. Schlather beschrieben als »unglaublich charmant und raffiniert … anspruchsvoll, dunkel, dreckig und sehr lustig ... eine tadellose Liebeskomödie«.
