Zum ersten Mal haben das Irish Baroque Orchestra und sein künstlerischer Leiter Peter Whelan das wohl bedeutendste Werk des Ensembles aufgenommen: Händels Messias, ein jährliches Highlight im Tourneeplan des IBO. Überraschenderweise ist dies die erste Aufnahme auf historischen Instrumenten durch ein irisches Ensemble – obwohl das Werk, ein Klassiker der Oratorienmusik, 1742 in Dublin uraufgeführt wurde. In diesem Jahr kam der finanziell angeschlagene Händel in die zweitgrößte Stadt der Britischen Inseln, um sein Glück neu zu versuchen. Nach der Premiere (700 Besucher, die Damen wurden gebeten, ohne Reifröcke zu kommen, die Herren ohne ihre Schwerter) verließ Händel Dublin als ein viel reicherer Mann.
Der Irish Baroque Choir und eine Reihe erstklassiger Sänger (Hilary Cronin, Helen Charlston, Alexander Chance, Nathan Mercieca, Guy Cutting, Frederick Long und Edward Grint) schließen sich dem IBO an, um zu versuchen, etwas von der Atmosphäre dieses außergewöhnlichen Moments einzufangen, in einer Aufnahme, die die Ursprünge dieses zeitlosen Meisterwerks zurückverfolgt.
