Die Biographie des Wenzeslaus Matiegka mutet wie ein romantisches Künstlerleben par excellence an. 1773 in der böhmischen Provinz geboren ging er nach Prag um Jura zu studieren. Als „Rechtsaktuar“ machte er denn auch relativ schnell Karriere – nur, dass ihm der Beruf überhaupt nicht behagte und, wie bei vielen Musikern dieser Generation, die Vorstellung einer persönlichen künstlerischen Berufung stärker war. Er zog 1800 in die Musikstadt Wien und lebte dort als Klavier- und Gitarrenlehrer. Er wurde dann noch Chorregent an St. Leopold, aber trotzdem verarmten er und seine Familie immer mehr, der soziale Abstieg war nicht aufzuhalten. Das letztendliche Scheitern des musikbegeisterten Juristen an den gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen hat Matiegka mit vielen Musikern der frühromantischen Generation gemeinsam. Seine Musiksprache besitzt jedoch soviel Stringenz und Originalität, dass z. B. sein Notturno op. 21 lange für ein Werk Schuberts gehalten wurde, der es aber nur mit einer zusätzlichen Cellostimme versah. In der Ausführung mit riginalinstrumenten wird erst der wahre Charme und die sublime Poesie – besonders im zarten Gitarrenklang – dieser romantischen Hausmusik lebendig.

Night Music from Early Romanticism
Wenzeslaus Matiegka’s biography reads like a romantic artist’s life par excellence. Born in the Bohemian countryside in 1773, Matiegka went to Prague to study law. He very quickly established himself as a “legal actuary” but did not at all find this career to his liking — and like many musicians of his generation he answered the stronger call of a personal artistic vocation. In 1800 he moved to Vienna, the music capital of the world, where he earned his living as a piano and guitar teacher. He also became the choirmaster at St. Leopold’s Church, but he and his family became increasingly impoverished, and their social decline could not be stopped. Like many other musicians of the early romantic generation, the music-loving jurist in the end had to surrender to the prevailing social order. His musical language, however, has so much perfect precision and originality that his Notturno op. 21, for instance, was long held to be a work by Schubert, whose only contribution to it was an additional cello part. It is only in a performance on original instruments that the true charm and sublime poetry of this romantic music for the private sphere, especially in the tender guitar sound, is rendered fully vivid.
