Askenazy und Lidström begannen ihre Zusammenarbeit in den 1980er Jahren in London, als Vladimir Ashkenazy das Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leitete und Mats Lidström dort Solocellist war. Auf BIS haben sie gemeinsam schon Konzerte von Kabalevsky und Khachaturian veröffentlicht. Diesmal bieten sie einen Klassiker, das 1. Cellokonzert von Schostakowitsch. 1959 wurde es komponiert in der kurzen politischen Tauwetterperiode nach dem Tod Stalins.
Aber natürlich musste auch dieses Werk wie jede Neukomposition die Zulassung durch die Komponistenvereinigung erhalten, und der damals gut zwanzigjährige Ashkenazy erlebte, wie nervös und unbehaglich Schostakowitsch während der Prüfung durch das allmächtige Komitee erschien. Die SACD beginnt mit Lidströms Eigenkomposition »Rigoletto Fantasie«, auf Verdis Oper basierend.
Das Werk ist inspiriert durch virtuose und dramatische Violinwerke wie Sarasates »Carmen-Fantasie«, und so hat Lidström Vergleichbares aus den Highlights von Rigoletto für sein Instrument zusammengestellt.
