Im Winter 1822 schrieb Rossini die Oper für La Fenice / Venedig. Das Libretto basiert auf Voltaires Drama Semiramis, 1748 verfasst. Lange Zeit wurde die Oper für den absoluten künstlerischen Höchstpunkt in Rossinis Schaffen gehalten – bis der 1829 Guillaume Tell veröffentlichte. Wie in allen Meisterwerken steht auch in Semiramide Bewährtes neben Neuem. Rossini stärkt die Rolle des Orchesters; die einleitende Sinfonia ist die längste und am besten ausgearbeitete, die er je geschrieben hat. Die Rolle der Semiramide erfordert eine Sängerin mit außergewöhnlichen Qualitäten; sie muss zugleich dramatisch, aber auch ein Koloratursopran sein. Von allen Sängerinnen und Sängern wird in dieser Oper höchste bel canto-Qualität gefragt.
