Lange Zeit war der Komponist Alois Bröder auf der Suche nach dem idealen Opernstoff für einen Auftrag des Theaters Erfurt, bis er diesen in Nathaniel Hawthornes Erzählung ‚The Wives of the Dead‘ fand. Die Vorlage bietet alles, was das Opernherz begehrt: „Sie bedarf nahezu keiner Kürzung, ist vieldeutig schillernd, narrativ aufgebrochen und kommt fast ohne interne Erzählung aus“, so der Komponist.
