Bereits 61 Jahre vor Haydn vertonte John Christopher Smith das Versepos "The Seasons" des schottischen Dichters James Thomson, das Haydn als Vorlage für sein Oratorium „Die Jahreszeiten“ dienen sollte. Smith beeindruckt hier durch besonders fantasievolle und farbenreiche Naturdarstellungen und beweist eindrucksvoll, dass er mehr war als nur das Faktotum Händels, sondern ein ernstzunehmender Komponist im übermächtigen Schatten Händels.
