Aufgrund des immensen Erfolgs seiner Opern »Dido & Aeneas« und »King Arthur« ließ Purcell 1692 »The Fairy Queen« folgen, die auf Shakespeares »A Midsummer Night’s Dream« basiert. Eigentlich handelt es sich dabei um eine »Semi-Oper« oder einen »Dialog mit Oper«, denn nur die entscheidenden Szenen sind mit Musik unterlegt. Diese Version des Sommernachtstraums vom Orpheus Britannicus wurde jedoch fast so berühmt wie die Vorlage. Mit den Liebesszenen, der überbordenden Fantasie, dem Sinn für musikalischen Humor – mit unbestechlichem Geschmack und unwiderstehlichem Charme.
