Die Lieder von Sir Arthur Sullivan entstanden überwiegend in den 1860er Jahren, also am Beginn seiner Komponistenkarriere. Man hört ihnen die Jugendlichkeit förmlich an: klare, volksnahe und prägnante Melodik gepaart mit experimentellen Harmonien und dem Spiel mit Formen.
Inspirieren ließ er sich häufig von Schumann und hatte wie dieser ein untrügliches Gespür für gut geeignete Textvorlagen.
Eine Auswahl seiner weit über hundert Lieder wird auf dieser CHANDOS-Produktion von einer Garde hochtalentierter englischer Newcomer interpretiert: Mary Bevan (Sopran), Ben Johnson (Tenor), Ashley Riches (Bass-Bariton) und David Owen Norris (Klavier).
