Philip Glass ist der einzige echte Sinfoniker unter den Vertretern des Minimalismus, zumindest bezeichnet und zählt er seine entsprechenden Werke auf traditionelle Weise. Die großangelegte Fünfte entstand als Auftragskomposition für die Salzburger Festspiele und wurde 1999 uraufgeführt. Sie reflektiert eine Reise durch die menschliche Erfahrungswelt anhand von diversen religiösen Texten. Das auch hinsichtlich des musikalischen Personals sinfonische Opus magnum wird hier von den vereinten Kräften der Trinity Wall Street unter Julian Wachner dargeboten und zum einen als Studioeinspielung auf CD und zum anderen als Konzertmitschnitt auf DVD präsentiert.
