Angesichts der Drohungen des stalinistischen Machtapparats wegen seiner Oper Lady Macbeth von Mzensk hätte 1936 die Uraufführung der vierten Sinfonie sicherlich nicht nur das künstlerische Ende Schostakowitschs bedeutet. So zog er die Komposition zurück, so dass sie bis 1961 ausschließlich nur in der Bearbeitung für zwei Klaviere aufgeführt werden konnte ‒ selbstredend nur im privaten Rahmen.
