Arrigo Boitos Lesart des legendären Stoffes ist von der Kraft der Imagination erfüllt, bleibt aber doch in weiten Teilen Goethes Originalkonzeption treu. Die Partitur prägt sich durch einen reichen Orchesterklang, aber auch durch überaus lyrische Momente und wunderbare Chor-Passagen nachhaltig ein. Robert Carsens aufwendige, postmoderne Inszenierung wirkt stellenweise grandios dekadent aber auch in ihrer Dramatik überraschend, und die Leistung der San Francisco Opera wurde nicht nur dort, sondern auch in Paris einhellig gefeiert. Samuel Ramey wurde für seine Interpretation der Titelrolle von der Kritik hoch gelobt.
