La Fille mal gardée, ein Klassiker des Royal Ballet, war beim britischen Publikum sofort ein Hit. Die Choreographie von Frederick Ashton aus dem Jahr 1960 ist eine überaus lyrische und technisch anspruchsvolle Interpretation der einfachen Erzählung von der »wiederkehrenden Liebe«, die dieser bezaubernden Geschichte zugrunde liegt.
Das Stück wurde vom französischen Ballettmeister Jean Dauberval kreiert und 1789 erstmals getanzt. Diese Wiederaufnahme im Jahr 2015 ist ein »Triumph der Kompanie« (Independent), bei dem die Hauptdarsteller Natalia Osipova und Steven McRae eine fantastische Chemie auf der Bühne entwickeln und herausragende Solodarbietungen abliefern – Osipova als »lebhafte, kindliche Lise« mit »stecknadelkopfpräziser« Phrasierung (Guardian) und McRae als auf Anhieb sympathischer, verspielter Colas, dessen körperliche Artikulation von »besonders ashtonscher« Qualität ist (Daily Telegraph). Zu ihnen gesellt sich Philip Mosley als Witwe Simone, die dem berühmten Holzschuhtanz des ersten Akts »Victoria-Geschmack« (Independent) verleiht.
