"Folk Songs from the Eastern Counties" ist das dritte in einer Reihe von vier Alben, die alle 81 englischen Volkslieder wiedergeben, die Ralph Vaughan Williams für Gesang und Klavier oder Violine arrangiert hat. 57 der 81 Lieder sind in diesen Bearbeitungen bisher noch nicht aufgenommen worden.
Dieses dritte Album enthält 21 Titel, darunter 14 Weltpremieren. Die wichtigste Sammlung (15 Titel) besteht aus Volksliedern, die Vaughan Williams selbst in den "Eastern Counties" - hauptsächlich Essex, Norfolk und Cambridgeshire - gesammelt und 1908 in diesen Bearbeitungen veröffentlicht hat. Es handelt sich also um die frühesten Werke der Reihe. Hinzu kommen "TwelveTraditional Country Dances", die 1931 für Maud Karpeles arrangiert wurden, sowie Lieder aus "The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs" und aus "The Motherland Song Book".
